The Victory of Hamas?
I recently heard a report on NPR (can't remember which program) about Hamas's victory in Gaza. The leaders of the movement recorded a victory speech which was played over the loud speakers. Not only did they fail to show up in Gaza to deliver the speech in person, but they recorded the horrific sounds of gun shots in the background. Was this a sign of their victory over Israel, their way of showing resilience? If so, I think they're fighting their own war, not one in which they truly care for Gaza's residents. I think it is disrespectful to play the sounds of gunshots to the population that has just been traumatized by such sounds for tree weeks or so. The gunshots, I believe, sound the same, whether they come from the Israeli or the Palestinian side. What horror! Thankfully, only five hundred people showed up. Most were occupied with examining their wounds (physical or psychological) or burying their dead friends or family members. If human tragedy is viewed as victory, a lot of work has to be done before the world is ready to embrace peace.
The new documentary, Pray the Devil Back to Hell, tells the story of a group of women who ended Liberia's second civil war.
